How can I obtain an emergency US passport without using an online application?

Question from a Reader, Answers in Comments

I’m getting married in October and have been trying to get a passport for almost 3 months now. It seems there is always some form of identification missing. Currently I am waiting on the final piece (my state ID) to apply. But now it is too late to apply through the post office. We’ve sent three emails to the Passport Agency in Chicago and a few to 24 hour places in Detroit. My fiance has to return to Norway on October 7 with or without me. Once he is gone I will not have a place to stay. Does anyone know who I can ask for help? I do not want to use an online service. Is there someone who can help me get a rushed passport? It seems that all the people who have the authority to help are not willling to. We’ve inquired about the expedited passport at the post office but it will take too long. We’ve contacted a local court house and they said use the post office. We’ve tried a passport agency and they are ignoring us. Please HELP!

Is passport needed to apply for EAD during the I-485 stage?

Question from a Reader, Answers in Comments

My H1-B is valid till dec 31st, 2007. From Jan 3rd, Iam planning to work with EAD. I need to apply for EAD tomorrow, but lost my passport yesterday. Getting a new passport takes atleast 2 months at my home country’s consulate here in usa.

I have applied I-485 couple of months back. Does anyone know whether we need passport to apply for EAD? I just remember only my passport number but that passport is now lost. I have filed a complaint at local police station and also informed my home country consulate.

I know that we need passport for the next H-1B, but Since I have applied for I-485 and am planning to use EAD, do we still need passport to apply for EAD?
