I did that with my old 500GB My Book drive for some reason but then deleted the OS X files to use it as a normal HD.
Well for the Studio its $200 and yes it is to the fullest + the speed software makes it super crazy fast
If you want to install Leopard on an external harddisc, you need the firewire connection. Its pretty easy to install. If your internal hd broke (like mine, I have the lousy Seagate hd in my powerbook model late 2005) you can boot from the external drive

What’s the current price in USA? I found some WDMT5000TE (the 500 GB version) for about 105 EUR in Germany. Do you have the full speed with the 800 firewire connection with the macbook pro?
